  • July 27th foundation of Banco Mercantil de Monterrey.

  • Foundation de Banco Regional del Norte.
1986
  • Merger of Banco Mercantil de Monterrey and Banco Regional del Norte to form Banco Mercantil del Norte (Banorte).
1992
  • A group of businessmen, led by Mr. Roberto González Barrera, acquires Banorte.
1993
  • Banorte acquires Afin Grupo Financiero.
  • Banorte Group is born.
1995
  • Banorte incorporates Bancentro, becoming a multi-regional institution.
1997
  • Banorte acquires Banpaís.
  • The Financial Group partners with Generali International, to operate insurance and pension funds.
1998
  • Modern information technology is introduced: the online banking system and the Banortel call center.
1999
  • Banorte celebrates 100 years and the slogan "EL BANCO FUERTE DE MÉXICO" is created (THE STRONG BANK OF MEXICO).
2001
  • GFNorte acquires 100% of the shares of Bancrecer.
  • Banorte consolidates its position as the fourth most important branch network in the Mexican banking system.
2004
  • New products and services are generated as a growth strategy, as in the case of the Mujer Banorte account.
2005
  • Alliance with Telecomm - Telegrafos to bankroll thousands of Mexicans.
  • The headquarters offices are moved to a modern building in Santa Fe, Mexico City.
2006
  • Banorte acquires Inter National Bank and the Uniteller remittance company in the United States.
2007
  • The United States Motran remittance company is acquired.
  • Banorte exceeds one thousand branches and 3,500 ATMs.
2008
  • Banorte "Best bank in Mexico" and "Best bank in Latin America" by Euromoney magazine.
2009
  • Afore Ahorra, Ixe Afore and Afore Argos sell their portfolio to Afore Banorte.
  • Banorte obtains for the fifth time the distinction of "Best Bank of the Year in Mexico" by the specialized magazine The Banker.
2010
  • World Finance recognizes GFNorte as "The best financial group in Mexico 2010".
2011
  • Fusion of Banorte and Grupo Financiero Ixe to become the third banking institution in Mexico.
2012
  • Banorte Generali merges with Afore XXI of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) to 50%.
  • The "Don Roberto González Barrera" Contact Center is inaugurated, coinciding with his death that same year.
  • 5 Regional Councils are created to provide advice to the Chairman of the Board of Directors on relevant aspects and opportunities in the different areas of the country.
2013
  • The Afore of BBVA Bancomer is acquired.
  • The acquisition of the minority participation of Grupo Generali in the insurance and pension companies is concluded.
  • Afore XXI Banorte consolidates its position as the largest fund manager for retirement in Mexico.
2014
  • Marcos Ramírez Miguel new CFO of the Group.
  • GFNorte enters the Emerging Markets Sustainability Index of Dow Jones.
2015
  • Carlos Hank González new Chairman of the Board of Directors.
2016
  • Corporate Restructuring: Creation of Banorte Ahorro y Previsión concentrating the Insurance, Pensions and Afore businesses.
  • Sale of InterNational Bank.
  • The 20|20 transformation plan begins with very challenging goals such as doubling net income in 5 years and achieving ROE of 20%.
2017
  • Indexamericas recognizes Banorte as a leader in Sustainability.
  • Banorte recognized within the Brand Finance Banking 500 ranking.
2018
  • Merger with Grupo Financiero Interacciones, placing us as the second financial institution in Mexico.
  • The magazine "The Banker" recognizes Banorte as the best Bank of Mexico.
2019
  • Pensiones Banorte signed agreement with pensiones SURA for the assignment of its life annuity income business.
